Journey Altered Book Layouts

This June, Lynette and I worked with some stencils and Dylusions sprays on our altered books.
We both like to use the sprays outside, as the spray seems to go everywhere.
Also, we don't have to put everything in a box to try and contain the spray.
For these tree stencils, I sprayed the left side, then closed the book.
The ink on top of the stencil created the right image.
Here is my virtual journey, through the trees.

Materials used:
Dylusions sprays

Brilliance Platinum Planet ink on black paper for the airplane
and Distress &  Stampin' Up! Inks

Stamps:

Book Paper & Altered Book Stampfest

The June 24th Stampfest at Lynette's started outside.
...with stencils and dylusions sprays on our altered books and some separate book pages.
Now we have lots of backgrounds to embellish!

Using an acrylic block, we sprayed color on it, then "stamped" it onto watercolor paper. Lynette then took a paintbrush to move some color, creating interesting backgrounds. My "painting" of the color did not turn out well, so I just added more spray, leaving the background "as is". Click any image for larger version.

Below are the cards I finished later.

Altered Books Stampfest

Lynette and I worked on our altered books at our most recent Stampfest on August 12th. Lynette started with photos of her granddaughter, Anella. Initially she worked on a tag with the Lonely Girl Stamp by Dina Wakley. Before she was done, however, she switched to a Julie Nutting doll design stamp and made a new tag.

I fell in love with the Lonely Girl tag. Graciously, Lynette not only let me copy her tag, but she shared all her supplies with me...the tulle for the dress, the mica sheet to place over the stamped image, the green fabric trim as well as the black cord for the "balloon", the fibers, ribbon and the pink crepe paper for the fringe. It was super easy for me because all the planning was already done by Lynette! Thanks, my friend!!

Lynette's made cutouts of her granddaughter, Anella on her journal layout.
Some of the stamps Lynette used are from Hero Arts and other stamps.

Above you can see the artist, Lynette, at work!

Here is my art journal layout. Some of the stamps I used:
Stampers Anonymous: Winged Things, Spring Sprung, Blueprint Light Bulb
Paper Artsy:  Kids-Plate 2 (Boy with fish)
 and other stamps.

A close up of Lynette's original Lonely Girl tag.

And here we are at the end of our fun stampfest!

Card Captain-Day 4-May 2, 2013

Happy Thursday! My project for today is an altered book layout. Maybe not so much a tutorial but an encouragement...when you alter a book, there are no rules! It's really fun and relaxing. You can do whatever you want. And if you make a mistake, you can rip out the page and start again in another part of the book.

My stamping friend, Lynette, and used Dylusions spray ink outside in her backyard. The colors are bright and vibrant, but we had trouble with the spay mechanism on 3 of the 4 bottles. We both wanted the fine mist look. We tried stencils and masks. After spraying over the stencil, we closed the book to transfer the ink from the top of the stencil to the other side of the book.

Stamped Michael Strong's dragonfly, butterfly, bird and egg on cardstock with various ink pads. Added additional color with colored pencils. Stamped various sentiments on cardstock. Used wavy scissors and the end of Labels Ten Nestabilities die to trim. Added Distress inks to edges with foam applicator. Trimmed purple paper with scissors to create "grass". Used dimentional foam adhesive to secure the egg in the "grass". Used  a small amount Perfect Paper Adhesive to adhere part of the the trimmed dragonfly, bird and butterfly and the edge of the tag. Used several strands of variegated sewing thread for the end of the tag.

I am not a fan of the ink sprays. I find that the spray gets all over the place. I worry that I'll ruin my clothing or something in my home! I prefer to sponge distress inks on the altered books. However, you may be intererested in the sprays. There are many tutorials online. Here is one from Dyan Reaveley
(Sorry for the incorrect link. It should be good now)
First she sprays water on her surface, either paper or her journal/altered book. I think that helps to blend the color. However, I was looking for a misted look. I would love to hear your comments on any of the info presented here.

Stampfest-Altered Books

Lynette and I began a new stamping project today...Altering books. We found lots of inspiration on Pinterest boards showing altered books and art journals! It was therapeutic (relaxing) to play with the papers, inks and stamps, and also to work on these together!
These 2 "layouts are Lynette's creations:
