Lady Faces July 2023

I'm at it again...artist "wanna-be"! This time I'm using my Jane Davenport Whimsical Girls book as my guide. This book was meant to be a workbook. The pages are made from and labeled with different kinds of paper: watercolor, marker paper, thin craft paper, coloring paper. There are a few pages of thin, colorful, collage paper that you can tear and use with acrylic medium for mixed media projects. For now, I am using this book for ideas on how to draw my lady faces. Not working on the actual pages of this book. Also, I just noticed that Jane has a YouTube on this book. 

For these faces, I used India Ink FABER-CASTELL Pitt Artist Pen, black, F (0.5 mm) and Canson watercolor paper, cold pressed 250 g/m2. When dry, I used Superior brand watercolors (set of 18 that my sister, Grace gave me). Also used my Jane Davenport  12 pan Bright Pallette watercolor set. Once dry, I added some ink blending to darken the colors: Gina K's sweet mango, wild dandelion, lucky clover and red velvet inks. Then I added some stamping around the edges.

For this second card, I used colored pencils to color the lady and ink blending for the border: Gina K's sweet mango, wild dandelion, lucky clover and passionate pink inks.

I decided not to color the border of this card. Really liked the lady as she is. I wasn't sure which colors to use for the background...and was afraid to ruin what I had already done.

I wanted to try the "lined" hair that I saw in Jane's book. It was more difficult than it looked. Always seems that way! Jane has written text beside many of her drawings in the Whimsical Girls book. I decided to try it. I copied her way of creating the letters-fun to do. I wanted to make this girl's purple hair a little different so I blended some red with the purple on my pallette. Also I copied the blouse design from Jane's book.

I really enjoyed the process of drawing and painting. And it was fun to make the drawings into cards that I can send to friends.

Beach Wave Birthday Card

 

Made this card about a week ago, using Theresa Momber's wonderful Sandy Beach Tutorial on YouTube. I was attracted to her idea of adding wave with white pigment ink! 

I got a lot of this wrong, but it was fun and relaxing...you know that sentiment that says "stamping is cheaper than therapy"...

Using plain white cardstock, I masked the horizon and used blending brushes for the background:

Gina K sea glass for the sky, distress salty ocean for the water and Stampin' UP! creamy caramel for the sand, leaving some white where the water would meet the sand. I also added some light brown Tombow marker, #977 for contrast and to dot the sand.

Once dry, I used a paintbrush dipped into a Gina K white pigment ink pad to brush on areas in the water that would look like waves and areas where the water meets the sand. Theresa Momber does a great job explaining how to do this in her YouTube.

Script Beautiful Friendship

 

Here are three cards I made for September's anniversaries. My inspiration came from Ingrid L's floral card that I saw on Pinterest. I really liked the way she used her script stamp with the flowers.

Now for a closer look...

The card base is cream cardstock with a laid finish from my stash.

Inks: Stampin' Up! Going Grey, Pretty in Pink, Rose Romance, Certainly Celery on the first 2 cards. Switched to Wild Wasabi on the third card.

PaperArtsy Kids Plate 2

I bought this PaperArtsy stamp set, "Kids-Plate 2" a long time ago. So glad to get some use from it. I have shared my most recent card first. Then you will see two cards made a few months ago.

Used Sizzix Texture Fades embossing folder Rays, sponging it with distress inks:

 faded jeans, fossilized amber, rusty hinge.

Images were stamped with faded jeans and rusty hinge and fussy cut.

Sponged antique linen on the white areas except for the sentiment.

Used a grey blue card base from my stash.

I love this world map embossing folder, but it is not mine. I think I made some impressions of it from my friend's embossing folder.

This card uses Stampin' UP!'s Old World Map stamp. I think date on it is 1998!

More Z-Fold Cards

I am still making Z-Fold cards inspired by Hetty and Tricia from Card Scrap here and here. I omitted the narrow Z-Fold strip on these cards. Used some old flower garden photos. 

By mistake I cut this card 4 inches high.  The folded size of this card is 4 inches high by 5-1/2 inches wide. It should have been 4-1/4 inches high. I forgot to take  photos before writing in some of these card. So I blurred that out.

I applied Tombow light blue marker #491 directly to the flower stamps. Then applied a slightly darker blue #452 to the edges of the flower. Huffed then stamped. The blue was still very light, so I added darker blue with a coloring pencil.

Z-Fold Card Inspired by Hetty and Club Scrap

Made this Z-fold card after seeing Hetty Sanders' Z-fold cards, whose inspiration came from Club Scap's Z-fold cards here and here.  I used cardstock and printed paper from my stash. 

The card stands up nicely.

This card fits inside an A2 envelope measuring 4-3/8 by 5-3/4 inches.

I stamped a rose from Stampin' Up!'s Hand Painted Petites, with distress peeled paint ink for the stem/leaves and SU ruby red ink for the rose. I stamped off twice for the solid part of the rose. The sentiment from Hero Arts Everyday Sayings, is also stamped in SU's Ruby Red.

Layered Guy Card

This birthday card was inspired by a card on  Anita Houston's Artful Maven blog. My card is quite simple compared to Anita's card. Sometimes I find it difficult to come up with card ideas for a guy. So I'm very thankful to Anita for the inspiration!

I love all the ephemera Anita used. I created my own ephemera making my tag to fit my card and stamping it with a Tim Holtz date chart stamp. Tim's ticket was stamped on red cardstock with distress ground espresso. The brown layer was dry embossed with Tim Holtz's Sizzix Alterations Bottle Caps folder.

Mountain Stampscapes

I stamped these mountains on some cardstock as a prop for a song I was singing to my grandkids. Later on I found Kevin Nakagawa's YouTube Tutorial and was able to make it into a card.

My scene is very basic! I liked how Kevin used a torn paper towel as a mask, to soften the edges when stamping. Kevin stamped on a photograph of clouds which he shared on that YouTube page. I used plain cardstock, because that's where I stamped the mountains. Maybe I will try stamping on a cloud photo sometime. I would also like to try Kevin's method of adding colored marker to the stamp to add a touch of color to the images. His tutorial has a lot of good information!

Usually when using Stampscapes stamps I stamp everything in black first. This time I only used black ink (distress black soot) on the church. The mountains were stamped in distress hickory smoke. The hills and trees were stamped in pine needles.

I used blending brushes to add color to the mountains, church and trees and pathway.

Here is a similar scene, where I substituted Kevin's Lakeside Cabin 147F for the Curvilinear Road and Church stamps.  I used distress hickory smoke to stamp the main images-mountains and scene. Then I used pine needles to stamp over the grey trees above the water. I sponged the cabin with distress wild honey and used hickory smoke to sponge all around the edges of the layer.

November 20 Stampfest at Lynette's

Lynette and I had a wonderful time Wednesday visiting and making cards!

Our first card was inspired by Dawn Turley's butterfly card.
We used Tim Holtz' watercolor crayons-festive berries, seedless preserves, fossilized amber and peeled paint, scribbling on our craft sheet, spritzing with water and using a paintbrush to apply the color onto watercolor paper. I found the Tim Holtz distress crayon watercolor kit on clearance for about $14 at Michaels.

Once the paper was dry we stamped a Hero Arts script stamp in hickory smoke using Hero Arts H2141 Manuscript Background. Then we used a stencil from another kit: Tim Holtz distress  mixed media spray stain kit-numbers and circles.

Lynette stamped some butterflies in hickory smoke.

I added more stenciling with fossilized amber and picked raspberry. Used a stencil from my stash that I had bought in The Netherlands a few years ago-thanks Hetty!!
We dry embossed the layer with Park Lane's Flower Repeat embossing folder and sponged the edges in hickory smoke.

We used Lynette's Tim Holtz "butterfly duo" thick die and embossing folder for the butterflies. We sponged with a few colors ending with festive berry and hickory smoke.

 Our flower card was inspired by Karen Dunbrook's card. We spritzed the flower stamp, applied Tim Holtz watercolor crayons directly to the stamp, spritzed again then stamped on watercolor paper.

The butterfly is punched from a Martha Stewart punch and "painted" with picked raspberry

Our third card was inspired by Jacqueline de Groot's Winter Scene houses card.
We used Lynette's Stampin' Up set, In the City. We started stamping the houses at the bottom. Lynette cut out masks and we proceed to stamp above each row, using Stampin' Up creamy caramel ink. The stamp set has a separate stamp to fill in the color of the houses. Very easy and fun. Other inks used: SU close to cocoa, chocolate chip, pistachio pudding, pretty in pink, bordering blue, barely banana.

Stampfest with Lynette May 13, 2019

Lynette and I spent Monday visiting and stamping. We made more Z Fold cards and tried something new for us: Smack Down technique.

Though we had made the Z Box Fold card before, we reviewed Deb Valder's tutorial on Splitcoaststampers. We cut the base as she suggested. After seeing a card on Splitcoaststamers made by annsforte3, we changed the top layer on the left front panel to fill the entire space. And we went with annsforte3's flower and butterfly theme. Lynette chose the stamps and colors!

My card

We tried out some printed papers on these Z Box Fold cards.

Lynette made this one. She used 2 step stamping for her mini roses and leaves.

Picked raspberry was stamped off  first, then full strength used for the second stamp.

The same with the leaves using peeled paint.

Stitched Shapes Oval Framelits Dies from Stampin' Up!

I used oxide picked raspberry on my roses. For my leaves I copied Lynette's idea of stamping off with peeled paint for the first impression, then full strength for the second stamp.

On the sentiment oval, I used  Tombow markers to ink a stamp from SU's Lots of Lavender set.

The green sentiment stamp, from Hero Arts was stamped in SU's wild wasabi.

Ovals dies from Nestabilities-Spellbinders.

Lynette found a fun, quick and easy technique called Smack Dow on Karen Dunbrook's Snippet's blog. Karen said this is a variation of a technique from Splitcoaststampers.

Lynette chose the stamps, SU's Watercolor Trio 

and ink colors: Stampin' Up! going gray Distress salty ocean, mermaid lagoon and peacock feathers. Then the sentiment from Ranger Letter It called Birthday LEC59295 was inked in Versafine onyx black.

Mini Stampfest with Lynette April 24, 2019

Lynette and I had a lot of fun trying to figure out how to make this Z Box Fold card.
We used Deb Valder's tutorial from Splitcoaststampers
starting with a 4 x 9.75 inch piece of white cardstock.
We found other tutorials for similar cards, but we liked the finished
size of this card: 4.25 x 5.5 inches.

Here is Lynette's sweet frog card.

On the front she used a Penny Black frog stamp called, "Oh I wish".
The ferns/leaves were made with some of her dies.

On the inside she used an unmounted frog stamp from her stash.
She did a fabulous job coloring the stamped images with coloring pencils
and then fussy cutting them!

Here's the card flattened out to show you the folds and cut area.
The bottom part is attached to a base -a piece of green cardstock that is 4.25 x 5.5"

For my card, I used Lynette's Silhouette Sentiments stamp set from
Stampin' Up. I used markers to color directly on the stamp.

The circle was die cut  with a "stitched circle die" from Lynette's stash.
I cut the rectangles with a paper trimmer.

Once we figured out where to place the cut and folds, this card was easy to make.
