Saran Wrap Technique

An artist friend shared a panel of her Saran Wrap technique recently. After seeing her art, I just had to try it. 

 

On my first attempt, I cut watercolor paper into smaller pieces. Then with a brush I wet the watercolor paper panels with plain water. Then added these watercolors, Mystic, Frida and Butterfly from my Jane Davenport Brights watercolor palette. Placed Saran Wrap over and made wrinkles in the Saran Wrap with my finger.

After it dried, I did not get many "wrinkle lines" as you can see in the results. My panels curled and since they were not taped down, the Saran Wrap shifted. 

On my second attempt at Saran Wrap Technique I taped two larger pieces of watercolor paper to my glass mat with Scrapbook.com Mint Tape. Note that on the right one, I used a breakfast cereal pouch. I learned about that on a YouTube, What can I use instead of plastic wrap in watercolor?... by Liz Chaderton Studio. She talked about how to use a cereal bag at the 3:19 mark in the timeline.

I tried to take a photo of the opened cereal bag. It's difficult to see on the white part of my glass mat.

Above you can see the result of the Saran Wrap layer on the left and the cereal bag layer on the right. I scrunched up the cereal bag before placing it on the wet watercolor. Then added a heavy book to weigh it down.

I cut the panels and plan to make cards. Here is what they may look like. I probably will add a white leaves die cut, like the first card. I am thinking of using these as Thank You cards for my neighbors and friends who have been so sweet to me for the past 4 weeks while I recover from knee replacement surgery.

Gina K Time To Coast Kit

Made these cards with Gina K's Time to Coast Card kit. This is the first card kit I've ever purchased. I think it was a good deal. I always love making flower cards...and I think the water scene stamps will be very fun to use for a long time. I enjoy watching Gina K's videos and find myself wanting to try the techniques she shares. Also, it is inspiring to see cards made by members of Gina's Facebook page, Gina K & Stamp TV Friends. Gina has live videos as well as a library of them on her YouTube Channel that's called Gina K Designs.

This was a quick and easy card using Gina K's  Sketched Flowers and Enjoyable Greetings stamp sets. I love how the inside part of the flower is a separate stamp. 

Inks: Gina K blue lagoon, distress mustard seed, Stampin' Up! wild wasabi, Versamark (with white PSX embossing powder)

Scalloped layer is cut with a scalloped rectangle die in Gina K's master layouts 4.

This is my second frame card using Gina K's Master Layouts 5 dies set. Just to clarify, Gina K's Master Layouts 5 dies set is NOT included with the Time to Coast Card Kit. I am very happy that I splurged and bought it! 

I made the faux wood finish described in Gina K's YouTube: Sunset Window Scene with Master Layouts 5 - Stamp and Chat Live Replay.

The layer behind the window is about 3-1/8 x 4-1/4". I made a few pencil marks on it so I could see where the window layer sits. 

Working from the bottom up, I masked an area that would be water. Applied Gina K's blue lagoon with blending brushes. Then moved the mask to cover the blue, I applied distress dried marigold ink above the "water". That seemed too light, so switched to distress abandoned coral. Then applied distress shaded lilac; then Stampin' Up brilliant blue. 

Using my Misti, I tested out the placement of the lighthouse stamp before inking it with Memento tuxedo black ink and stamping. Added the two larger birds by stamping with an acrylic block. 

Using colored pencils, I added red to the lighthouse and side building and grey to the tops of the rocks.

Used foam tape to attach the window to the scene layer.  Used the scallop rectangle from Gina K's Master layouts 4 for the grey-blue layer. Used Gina K's connect glue to adhere to the white card base.

I stamped the lighthouse image with the misti before adding color on this card. This card layout is the same as the frame card above it. 

Used Gina K's tranquil teal for the water and distress dried marigold for the sky.

I made a "sun" stencil using the plain circle from Gina K's Master Layouts 5 die set. Placed that on the layer and sponged distress dried marigold through the piece cardstock with the circle removed. Then I tried to make rays by sponging next to strips of cardstock. I did not get it quite right. Need to take a closer look at one of Gina's video tutorials. I do not have her sunshine stencil...yet! 

As in the previous card, I colored the lighthouse and building red and the clouds and tops of the rocks with grey.

Painted Blossoms Cards

My Gina K order arrived this week. This card is made with the free stamp set, Painted Blossoms. The scalloped layer is cut from Gina's die from Master Layouts 4. Used Stampin' Up's so saffron, certainly celery and wild wasabi inks. Used Tombow brown marker  #977 to color in the center of the coneflowers.

I saw Gina K make a card like this on her Stamp and Chat Live Replay for Sunset Window Scene with Master Layouts 5.  It was very fun watching the video a second time and working on this card with Gina! The faux wood finish is very easy to create. You can use whatever ink color you wish! Before cutting out the window frame, I started with a piece of cardstock, 4-1/4 x 5-1/2 inches. Scored it lengthwise about every inch. With direct to paper technique swiped with my distress weathered wood inkpad to give it a little bit of color and texture. I didn't have all the ink colors that Gina used. From the bottom up, I used blending brushes to apply these ink colors:

Stampin' Up-groovy guava then distress worn lipstick. I chose distress shaded lilac for the next color, but I was supposed to use Gina's turquoise sea-which I actually have! So, I bushed the turquoise sea over a lot of the lilac I had already applied.  Next I used Stampin' Up's blue bayou, but that was too grey. Switched to distress stormy sky. No,  that wasn't right either. Finally used distress faded jeans for the top layer. 

Stamped the flowers and leaves from Gina K's Painted Blossoms set. 

On the top area of blue I added some wink of stella for some shine, but it doesn't show on this photo.

The sweet friend sentiment is from Gina K's Enjoyable Greetings stamp set. I stamped with versamark then embossed with PSX white embossing powder. 

It was very fun playing with these dies and creating the multi colored background. Looking forward to playing with the rest of Gina K's Time to Coast card kit.

More Background Cards

Three more cards today using more of backgrounds I shared yesterday. 

For this card, I added stenciling with distress abandoned coral and salty ocean. Used distress hickory smoke to stamp the lady, feather and flower from Bella Blvd, distributed by Hampton Art. Happy Birthday from Stampendous is stamped in Versafine onxy black. Used colored pencils to color the images. 

Used a scalloped rectangle die from the Gina K Master Layouts 4. I'm really loving this die! And it cuts easily every time (unlike some other brands of dies-which is so discouraging!)

After adding some stenciled circles using distress picked raspberry, I tried to stamp and clear emboss two flowers using distress ink. In the past this has worked fine for me. But today, the embossing powder was not sticking well. My ink pad must need to be re-inked! So, I switched gears and tried a Gina K technique that I saw on her recent YouTube, Emboss in Any Color and a Touch of Patterned Paper - Stamp and Chat  Using my misti, first I stamped the flower with distress broken china. Cleaned the stamp and inked it with Versamark and then stamped over the blue flower then added clear embossing powder and embossed it. This worked great! I repeated this method for the picked raspberry leaves stamps. 

On this card, I am using the other lady stamp from Bella Blvd, distributed by Hampton Art. The flowers and leaves are from an Altenew set called Wildflower Garden. The Happy birthday and curvy layer was made with Hero Arts, DC184 Ribbon Messages Stamp & Cut set.

I stamped the lady in distress antique linen as a kind of a test. I read somewhere that someone liked to use antique linen ink to stamp an image before coloring it. I cannot remember who, sorry! Added color with colored pencils. I am not sure which ink color I like better, the hickory smoke in the first card or the antique linen here. What do you think? 

This anniversary card is similar in style to yesterday's yellow card. Again I'm using Gina K's Master Layouts 4 scalloped die and the same circle stencil to sponge with Stampin' UP's Lavender Lace ink. Used distress broken china  for the best wishes from Hero Arts, DC184 Ribbon Messages Stamp & Cut.

Backgrounds for Cards

 

I should have taken a picture of all the backgrounds I made before making these cards. Above you see the five cards I finished.  Below are the rest of my backgrounds that hopefully will become new cards.

Made my backgrounds using wrinkle free distress and acrylic block stamping techniques.

For this card I used an acrylic block, dabbed it with Gina K's Bubblegum pink and Sea glass ink pads. Then I spritzed with water and pressed it onto my paper. After it was dry, I stamped sewing images from a small 5 piece Stampabilities set called Sewing. The happy birthday sentiment and curvy layer is from Hero Arts Stamp & Cut.

Inks: 

distress salty ocean, weathered wood, spiced marmalade, wild honey and  brushed corduroy, which was added to just the edges of the sewing machine stamp and happy birthday sentiment after being inked with wild honey, Gina K bubblegum pink for the button

Another acrylic block stamped background using Jane Davenport's Mermaid Markers, which are like "ink filled aqua pens". Colors, starting with lower right corner: Starfish (hot pink), Jellyfish (purple), Pirate's Gold (yellow), Seaweed (green). Applied to acrylic block, "coloring it" as you would with markers, then spritzed with water then pressed onto paper.

Used Versafine onyx black ink for the stamping:

Card of the Day-Friday

Happy Friday!

I am using a watercolor and embossed layer from my stash.
It's nice to make extra, when you have your watercolor paints out.
Makes it quick and convenient...no need to wait for the paint to dry!
Today I sponged the edges with distress distress weathered wood.

As I've mentioned before, I love Michael Strong's mini flowers.

For today's card I stamped them in distress festive berries and abandoned coral 

(which was a 2nd impression to get the lighter look).

After seeing YouTubes by Dina Wakley and Jane Davenport in the last few months,

I have been compelled/obsessed to try and draw faces! 

...with the emphasis on trying!

Every time I give it a try, my faces look different. 

I wish I could control the look, but in the meantime, it's been therapy just drawing! 

I thought I'd share my attempts. 

I didn't like the brown or blonde/yellow for the hair.

Was inspired to use blue after seeing Jane Davenport's pictures with pink and blue hair.

Watercolor Background

A friend asked me about my recent watercolor background so I decided to make a tutorial

I'm using a set of  used 28 watercolor "cakes" that my friend, Lynette gave me.

I think they are made by Simbalion.

I used a brush from my stash.

I wet my brush with water and swish it on the color cake to fill my brush with rich color!

Then I paint the colors in sections.

I'm using a "watercolor textured" paper that was given to me.

I don't know the weight or brand. It is about 4.5" high and 7.5" wide.

You can see from the photos that I just just keep adding colors.

The paper curls. It's ok if the colors run together. Makes things interesting!

Normally I let the paint air dry, but I was in a hurry to finish the card, so I used my heat tool. 

Here is the dried paper photographed in daylight, showing more accurate color.

The previous photos were taken with fluorescent light giving a blue cast.

I used half of my watercolor paper for my card. 

Roughened the edges with a distress tool.

Here is the inside, with a layer of thinner cardstock.

with a Fiskars edge punch.
