Stamping Sew In Labels With Acrylic Paint

Here is my simple tutorial for stamping on fabric with acrylic paint mixed with fabric medium to make your own sew in labels. I previously did a blog post on this topic here.

Mix equal parts acrylic paint and fabric medium with a brush and then apply it to a makup sponge.
I used Dina Wakley acrylic paint and Liquitex fabric medium, mixing in a paint tray.

Make sure paint is equally distributed and tap your stamp on it 2 or 3 times. I tested on scrap fabric to be sure it stamped well. If you get too much paint on the stamp the letters will smudge. So clean off the paint and do another sample till it looks good.

I created fabric strips using my serger sewing with a narrow hem. You can use any strip of cotton fabric, such as cotton twill tape. Place fabric strips on protective paper-I used an old calendar here. Stamp by pressing down carefully and lifting straight up. Leave space between each stamped impression so fabric raw edge can be turned under before sewing into garment.

Allow paint to dry thoroughly-preferably 24 hours. Then heat set with iron-dry setting, using a press cloth. For a press cloth, used an old men's handkerchief and press for about 10-20 seconds, though I have read to heat set for 2 to 3 minutes...not sure about that! Also wait about a week before laundering to help set the paint.

Here is what my label looks like in a pair of bike shorts I made for my granddaughter. I love having a custom label to sew into gifts.

Mountain Stampscapes

I stamped these mountains on some cardstock as a prop for a song I was singing to my grandkids. Later on I found Kevin Nakagawa's YouTube Tutorial and was able to make it into a card.

My scene is very basic! I liked how Kevin used a torn paper towel as a mask, to soften the edges when stamping. Kevin stamped on a photograph of clouds which he shared on that YouTube page. I used plain cardstock, because that's where I stamped the mountains. Maybe I will try stamping on a cloud photo sometime. I would also like to try Kevin's method of adding colored marker to the stamp to add a touch of color to the images. His tutorial has a lot of good information!

Usually when using Stampscapes stamps I stamp everything in black first. This time I only used black ink (distress black soot) on the church. The mountains were stamped in distress hickory smoke. The hills and trees were stamped in pine needles.

I used blending brushes to add color to the mountains, church and trees and pathway.

Stamps:
Stampscapes: Rocky Peaks 118F, Curvilinear Road 145F, Church Sm.298B,
Tree Duo 085A
Tim Holtz Stampers Anonymous THJ009 Saying Stuff

Inks:
Stampin' Up!: going grey
Distress: chipped sapphire, faded jeans, shaded lilac, pine needles, scattered straw, wild honey, gathered twigs
Versafine: Onyx Black for the sentiments.

Here is a similar scene, where I substituted Kevin's Lakeside Cabin 147F for the Curvilinear Road and Church stamps.  I used distress hickory smoke to stamp the main images-mountains and scene. Then I used pine needles to stamp over the grey trees above the water. I sponged the cabin with distress wild honey and used hickory smoke to sponge all around the edges of the layer.

Panel Cards with Printed Papers

I was so glad to find a way to use scraps left over from my Teepee cards.
I cut the printed papers into 1-5/8 inch strips. My side pieces are 3-3/4 inches long. I stamped the sentiment and then cut the center piece. My printed papers are attached to a black panel which is  5-1/4 inch wide by 4 inches high.

Stamps: Stampin' Up!

Beautiful Friendship Cards

My friend, Mona, gave me the Stampin' Up! set called Beautiful Friendship. I complimented her on a card she sent me and before I knew it, that set was in my mailbox!

I pulled out my little "wooden peg bow maker" for the small bows. Thank you Hetty-for giving that to me!

These cards were inspired by Julianne Richards card.

Inks: Stampin' Up! almost amethyst, Distress mowed lawn
